Oracy

Oracy – North Cestrian’s programme of character development to build everyone’s ability to articulate ideas, develop understanding and engage with others through spoken language. Four key verbal communication skill sets lie at the centre of our oracy provision and underpin the development and delivery of all of our programmes: Reasoning and Evidence; Organisation and Prioritisation; Listening and Response; and Expression and Delivery.

Developing oracy is at the heart of…
  • Character development – a key tool of a persons passion and purpose. Sophistication will benefit from oracy as the acquisition of cultural capital is key to growing and using a broadening and deepening knowledge. – Cestrian C
  • The honest self-reflection and importance of safety, happiness, and well though out opinion in a well ordered environment and community - Cestrian B
  • Being a role model in all of these 15 themes of our Attitude to Learning – Cestrian A

Report by the Commission on the Future of Oracy Education in England:

In order to prepare young people for their future, oracy should be the fourth “R” of education – of equal status to reading, writing and arithmetic.

  • increased emphasis on oracy education to better prepare all young people to become fulfilled future citizens;
  • building block for reading, writing and students’ academic progression through school;
  • oracy skills in an AI-transformed labour market to ensure young people are well-prepared for success in the workplace

Polling conducted on behalf of the Commission found that over 80% of business leaders and parents support more time being spent on the development of young people’s oracy skills at school.

The Commission calls for the government to:
  1. Integrate speaking, listening and communication across the curriculum
  2. Ensure the history and richness of the English language is a key focus
  3. Provide a broad curriculum enabling children to access the value of the expressive arts and citizenship as contexts for oracy
